Who is Abdul Raziq Khan?
Abdul Raziq Khan
Born September 30, 1995, Abdul Raziq Khan is a Montreal entrepreneur, community organizer, and political candidate from Parc-Extension, the neighbourhood where he was raised and still lives. He founded Mama Khan, a restaurant on rue Saint-Denis, and later created non profit called Madinah Foundation to tackle food insecurity and build community programs across the city. Together, these efforts have delivered over 10,000 free meals and launched an inclusive community soup kitchen.
Roots in Parc-Extension
Abdul attended Sinclair Laird Elementary and LaurenHill Academy (Class of 2012), then Vanier College (Social Sciences, 2015). He studied at Concordia University before choosing a hands-on path in his community. Before the restaurant world, he spent five years in public security, working major events like the Canadian Grand Prix, venues such as Club Soda and the Bonaventure Hotel, and private assignments across Montreal.
From kitchen to community
In 2021, Abdul opened Mama Khan as a ghost kitchen during the pandemic, then moved to a storefront in May 2021, and expanded next door on October 13, 2023. The restaurant quickly became a base for community work: weekly food distributions for unhoused neighbours, a Pay It Forward meal voucher program launched in September 2023 that has provided 1,500+ meals, and rapid response during crises like the 2023 ice storm.
Programs and partnerships
In March 2025, Mama Khan delivered 1,388 hot meals during Ramadan to single-parent households and widows across Montreal. Abdul has linked sport and service through Bishop’s University basketball, donating a meal for every three-pointer scored, and similar “goals for meals” efforts with local soccer and ball-hockey tournaments. He organized the Halal Food Festival at ICC Masjid in September 2024, bringing together 16 local organizations and businesses.
Beyond food, Abdul partnered with Swab the World to host stem-cell donor registration clinics at Mama Khan, increasing South Asian representation on registries and improving match prospects for patients from underrepresented communities.
Created a free homework program for underprivileged kids at this restaurant in the year 2024.
The soup kitchen
On September 2, 2025, Abdul launched a community soup kitchen at Mama Khan. The service offers a no-questions-asked hot lunch, Tuesday to Friday, 12:00 to 14:00. Menus include vegan options and dishes prepared with Québec produce, with halal preparation observed in the kitchen. The project reduces waste by redirecting surplus ingredients and is powered by staff, volunteers, and local suppliers. Early partners include Islamic Relief Canada, Penny Appeal Canada, and The Refugee Centre. The initial target is about 1,600 meals per month.
Recognition
Abdul’s work has been featured by CityNews, CBC Radio, CTV, Global News, and other outlets for its practical, community-first approach to food security and local leadership.
